There could be several reasons why the COM port cannot be opened during the firmware upgrade process. Here are some possible causes and solutions:
1. Wrong COM port selected: Double-check that you have selected the correct COM port in the iOptron Upgrade Utility program. Make sure to choose the COM port that corresponds to the USB connection between the 8409 hand controller and your computer.
2. Mount not connected: Ensure that the mount is properly connected to your computer via the USB cable. Check that the cable is securely plugged into both the USB port on the hand controller and the USB port on your computer.
3. Cable not plugged in firmly: Sometimes, the connection between the USB cable and the hand controller or computer may not be secure. Try unplugging and re-plugging the cable to ensure a firm connection.
4. PL2303 VCP driver not installed: If this is the first time you are connecting the mount to your computer, you need to install the PL2303 VCP driver. Run the PL2303 VCP installer, which can be downloaded from iOptron's website, to install the driver.
5. FTDI USB-RS232 chipset: If your hand controller has an FTDI USB-RS232 chipset instead of the PL2303 chipset, you will need to use the FTDI VCP driver instead. Make sure you have the correct driver installed for your specific chipset.
If you have checked all of the above and are still experiencing issues with opening the COM port, it is recommended to contact iOptron's technical support at support@ioptron.com for further assistance. They will be able to provide you with specific troubleshooting steps based on your situation.
