To set up the icon Audio LA 4 MK III Pure Valve Line Preamplifier, follow these steps:
1. Unpack the unit carefully and ensure it is in good condition. Keep the packaging for warranty/service return.
2. Check the mains voltage and ensure it is suitable for your area. If not, contact your dealer.
3. Fit the rectifier valve (274B/GZ34/5AR4) in the rear center socket.
4. Fit the three 6SN7/CV181 valves. They can be fitted in any order, but try not to pull them by the glass envelope to avoid damage. Align the "spigot" or keyway of the valve with the socket before pushing it into place.
5. Connect the preamplifier to your source and output units (e.g., CD, Tuner, Tape, Phono preamp, power amp) using appropriate phono sockets and leads. OUT 1 and OUT 2 are the same, but OUT 2 can be modified to be attenuated if needed.
6. Connect the preamplifier to the mains supply using the supplied IEC mains lead to a 230/117V supply. If you need to change the mains plug, wire it as follows: Brown to Live terminal, Blue to Neutral terminal, and Green/Yellow to Earth terminal.
7. Switch on the preamplifier. The LED power indicator should light up, and the unit will take approximately 40 seconds to start working. The valves should have a visible orange glow from the cathode heaters. At minimum volume, there should be no sound coming from the speakers except for a barely discernible gentle hum.
8. Select the correct input and adjust the volume. The best sound quality will be achieved after the unit has warmed up for about 20 minutes.
