To turn on the XC Tracer Mini V variometer, press and hold the red button until you hear a "beep-beep" sound. The GPS will then search for a fix, and once it has a fix, the variometer will make a "beep-beep-beeeeep" sound and the white LED will start flashing every 2-3 seconds. The variometer will remain silent while you are still on the ground, but as soon as you take off, it will start beeping.
