To install the ROCKLER 36073 Heavy-Duty Cross Dowel and Bolt, follow these steps:
1. Measure and mark the center on the end of the stretcher. This is where you will drill the 9/16" diameter hole for the bolt.
2. Use a square to extend the horizontal centerline from the end onto the inside face of the stretcher.
3. Calculate how far from the end of the stretcher the hole for the cross dowel needs to go. Subtract the thickness of the leg from 4 3/4". Measure that distance from the end of the stretcher and make a vertical mark on the inside face.
4. Mark the drilling location for the through hole for the bolt on the leg. Ensure accuracy as this hole must align exactly with the hole in the end of the stretcher.
5. Use a 9/16" diameter drill bit to drill a through hole in the leg at the marked location and a 2" deep stopped hole in the end of the stretcher.
6. Switch to a 7/8" diameter Forstner bit and drill a 1 7/16" deep hole for the cross dowel on the inside face of the stretcher.
7. Fit the cross dowel into the hole in the stretcher with the slotted end facing you.
8. Position the stretcher against the leg so that the end-grain hole in the stretcher aligns with the through hole in the leg.
9. Insert the bolt in the through hole in the leg and fit it into the end-grain hole in the stretcher. Rotate the cross dowel with a flat-head screwdriver until you can thread the bolt into it.
10. Use a 7/8" wrench or socket to tighten the bolt and bring the parts securely together.
Remember to periodically check all hardware to ensure it hasn't come loose during use and retighten as necessary. Non-permanent blue thread locker can also be used to minimize loosening.
