To install the PHOENIX DOMES Metal Chimney Flashing Kit, you will need the following materials: Metal Flashing, Storm Collar, Interior Collar, Vinyl Collar, Vinyl Cement, Wood Stove with Stove Pipe, Insulated Chimney Pipe with 8" Outer Diameter, 2 Ladders (ideally, 1 interior and 1 exterior), Exacto Knife or Scissors, Metal Screws and xxxx Gun, Paintbrush, Paper towels, Tube of Lexel Construction Sealant, Caulking Gun, and a Partner.
Here is a step-by-step guide for installation:
1. Warm up your glue: If the outdoor temperatures are below 15ºC/59ºF, bring your glue inside in advance to warm it up. The lower the temperature, the quicker the glue will set. If cold temperatures are unavoidable, apply the glue and collar quickly to prevent premature hardening.
2. Decide on the location: Ensure your wood stove is in its desired final location and check the clearance requirements on the manufacturer's specifications. Consider using a heat shield to protect walls. The chimney pipe does not need to penetrate the roof in the center of a given ceiling triangle. Mark the central target by cutting a small X through the layers of your Dome, including the outer cover.
3. Position the oval collar: Slide the aluminum oval collar onto your stove pipe before dropping down the insulated chimney. The collar should be installed at the internal junction where your insulated chimney meets and passes through the layers of your Dome.
4. Situate the insulated chimney and metal flashing: Expand the hole of your roof penetration to provide 2" of clearance away from the chimney pipe. Drop the insulated chimney piece onto your stove pipe and slide the metal flashing down the chimney pipe until it is parallel with the surface of your Dome's outer cover. Make any necessary adjustments to the exit hole or stove position.
5. Glue the vinyl collar: Slide the vinyl collar over the insulated chimney, ensuring the solid color half faces out and the drain section faces the ground. Apply a thin coat of glue to both surfaces in the appropriate areas, wait about a minute, and firmly press and rub them together while ensuring no creases.
6. Secure the storm collar and complete the chimney: Wrap the storm collar around the chimney pipe just above the upper extent of the metal flashing and secure it tightly with metal screws. Apply a thin bead of Lexel sealant around the upper edge of the storm collar. Add the next length of insulated chimney pipe with its storm cap to complete the upper chimney.
7. Interior finishing: Trim the various layers of your Dome to the edge of the metal flashing from the interior. Slide the oval collar onto the insulated chimney and press it against the layers of your Dome. Secure the interior collar in place with a single short metal xxxx .
Optional: If needed, consider installing a third-party chimney support for added stability and protection against heavy winds. Consult your local wood stove supplier or search online for universal or pitched roof chimney support kits.
Once you have completed these steps, your PHOENIX DOMES Metal Chimney Flashing Kit will be ready for use.
