To protect your Franklin Electric 225594101 10 Inch Rewindable Motor from lightning damage, it is recommended to install a lightning arrestor. Lightning arrestors are devices that provide protection by conducting high voltage surges to ground, preventing damage to the motor.
The lightning arrestor should be matched to the voltage of your motor. For single-phase motors with line to line voltage up to 250 volts and line to ground voltage up to 125 volts, you can use the Franklin Electric Single Phase Arrestor No. 150814902. For three-phase motors with line to line voltage up to 650 volts and line to ground voltage, you can use the Franklin Electric Three Phase Arrestor No. 155440902.
Proper grounding is crucial for effective lightning protection. The lightning arrestor ground lead must be connected, metal to metal, all the way to the water strata, following the National, State, and Local Electrical Codes. Grounding the arrestor to the supply ground or a driven ground rod provides little to no surge protection for the motor.
