To apply CertainTeed Marco Spark-Perf Drywall Joint Tape, follow these steps:
1. Prepare the surface: Make sure the gypsum board joints and corners are clean and free from dust or debris. Smooth out any rough areas or imperfections on the surface.
2. Mix joint compound: Follow the instructions on the joint compound container for mixing and use. Ensure that the compound is at the right consistency for application.
3. Hand taping: For hand taping, apply a first coat of joint compound over the joint using a four-inch knife. Press the joint tape firmly into the compound by pressing the knife over the tape. Squeeze out excess compound, making sure there is enough joint compound under the tape to ensure a good bond.
4. Tape application: Apply the joint tape along the length of the joint, pressing it firmly into the compound. Make sure the tape is centered over the joint for accurate corner applications. Smooth out any wrinkles or bubbles in the tape.
5. Excess compound removal: Use the knife to remove any excess compound that may have squeezed out from under the tape. Ensure that all joints and fasteners are completely concealed.
6. Drying and subsequent coats: Allow each coat to dry thoroughly before applying the next coat. If the tape lifts or bubbles along the edges after drying, cut out the affected area in the shape of a canoe before applying the next coat. If the tape lifts in the center, tear out the affected area and re-tape. Apply a second and third coat, ensuring that all joints and fasteners are completely concealed. Feather each subsequent coat beyond the last to achieve a smooth surface.
7. Sanding and finishing: Sand between coats where necessary to achieve a smooth surface. Continue applying coats and sanding until the desired finish is achieved.
Note: It is important to follow the recommendations of the compound manufacturer and the guidelines provided by ASTM and Gypsum Association publications for the application and finishing of gypsum board. Adequate ventilation is also required to avoid excess moisture during the application process.
