To install the MINN KOTA MKR-28 Trolling Motor Plug and Receptacle, follow these steps:
1. Choose a suitable mounting location that has a flat area measuring at least 3-¼" wide x 2-½" high. Use the Face Plate (Item #2) to check for clearance at the desired location.
2. Ensure that the power source is disconnected or turned off before starting the installation to avoid electric shock.
3. Trim and strip the Boat Wires that will be connected to the plug. Use a Wire Cutter to remove any terminals or covers on the wires.
4. Strip the protective covering on the wires using a Wire Stripper. Remove ½" to ¾" of the covering to expose the wires. If the Positive (+) and Negative (-) Boat Wires are fused together, split them so they are separated for a minimum of 2-½" from the end of the shortest wire.
5. Place a Ferrule (Item #10 or #12) on the end of each wire to encase the wire strands.
6. Slide a two-inch Shrink Tube (Item #16) over the end of the longer Positive (+) Boat Wire.
7. Place a Splicer (Item #18) on the end of the Positive (+) Boat Wire and secure it by tightening the Set xxxx with a 3/16" Allen Wrench to 20 in-lbs.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for the Plug Receptacle wires using the black Negative (-) Wire.
9. Align the red Positive (+) Wire on the Plug Receptacle with the Positive (+) Boat Wire and insert it into the Splicer. Align the black Negative (-) Wire from the Plug Receptacle with the Negative (-) Boat Wire and insert it into the Splicer. Secure the Set Screws of both Splicers with a 3/16" Allen Wrench to 20 in-lbs.
10. Slide the Shrink Tubes over the Splicers and use a Heat Gun to secure them in place.
11. Push the wires and the Plug Receptacle into the drilled hole until the Plug Receptacle sits against the mounting surface. Ensure there are no gaps around the Shrink Tubes that would allow water to reach the connection.
12. Place the Face Plate (Item #2) over the Plug Receptacle, ensuring the keys on the Inner Circle align with the outer edge of the Plug Receptacle. Attach the Dust Cover (Item #C) to the hook on the back side of the Face Plate.
13. Insert the Plug Assembly (Item #A) into the Plug Receptacle, ensuring they are fully pushed together. The Threaded Collar on the Plug Assembly does not need to be tightened.
14. Adjust the position of the assembly to ensure clearance and ease of plugging and unplugging the plug.
15. Mark the xxxx hole locations on the mounting surface using a pen or marking tool. Remove the assembly and drill pilot holes on the marked locations.
16. Place the assembly back on the mounting surface, align the drilled pilot holes with the xxxx holes on the Face Plate, and secure the Face Plate with four #8-18 x 1-¼ Screws using a Phillips Screwdriver.
17. Connect the Power Leads of the trolling motor to the Plug Assembly, following the same steps as for the Boat Wires.
18. Secure the Shrink Tubes with a Heat Gun and slide the Splice Cover over the Shrink Tubes.
19. Ensure the Dust Cap is installed when the plug is not in use to protect the electrical contacts.
