Before applying the gel coat, it is important to properly prepare the surface. Here are the steps and materials needed for surface preparation:
1. If there are any exposed metal areas with rust (oxidation), sand the area with 220 grit sandpaper to remove the rust and expose bare metal.
2. Clean the application area using a clean cloth and isopropyl alcohol. This will ensure the best adhesion of the gel coat.
3. If there are any cracked or damaged areas, remove any loose edges of the gel coat using a razor knife or by grinding with a router or Dremel® type tool.
4. Sand the routed area with 100 or 220 grit sandpaper to smooth any roughness around the area to be filled.
5. Thoroughly clean the gap/crevice with a white cloth saturated with acetone.
6. Clean the surface around the repair area with acetone.
By following these steps, you will ensure that the surface is properly prepared for the application of the gel coat.
