Before applying the gel coat repair kit, it is important to properly prepare the surface. Here are the steps to follow:
1. If there are any exposed metal areas with rust (oxidation), sand the area with 220 grit sandpaper to remove the rust until bare metal is visible.
2. Clean the application area using a clean cloth and isopropyl alcohol. This will ensure the best adhesion of the gel coat repair product.
3. If there are any cracked or damaged areas, remove any loose edges of the gel coat using a razor knife or by grinding with a router or Dremel-type tool.
4. Sand the routed area with 100 or 220 grit sandpaper to smooth any roughness around the area to be filled.
5. Clean the gap or crevice thoroughly with a white cloth saturated with acetone.
6. Clean the surface around the repair area thoroughly with acetone.
By following these steps, you will ensure that the surface is properly prepared for the gel coat repair application.
