To set up the EBS Magni 502 Bass Combo, follow these steps:
1. Carefully unpack the bass combo.
2. Check that all knobs are set fully counterclockwise, except for the EQ controls (BASS, MIDDLE, and TREBLE), which should be set to the mid position. Also, make sure all push switches are set to their outer positions. This ensures that the settings are "zeroed" and ready to be personalized.
3. If you want to add another cabinet, make sure the impedance of that cabinet is not below 4 ohms.
4. Turn on the POWER switch.
5. Plug in your bass. While plucking the strings as hard as you would during your hardest playing, gradually increase the GAIN xxxx until the peak LED starts to flash at peaks.
6. Move over to the VOLUME xxxx and adjust it for the desired output volume.
7. The first tonal shaping circuitry is the Character Filter next to the GAIN control. Enable the filters by pressing the Filter Active push button and explore the filter section. Play your bass. Note that there won't be any difference in sound yet.
8. The filters are boost/cut design. Use the level controls marked with + and - signs to either boost or cut the selected frequency band. The MIDDLE section has a frequency control for precise adjustment of the midrange.
9. Gradually increase or decrease the level and vary the frequency of the middle filter when operating the middle filter. Notice how the sound is affected. You can compare the sound with and without the filters by toggling the filter active switch.
10. Proceed to the COMP/LIMIT xxxx . This control adjusts the compression and is useful when playing very dynamic or loud. Turn up the COMP/LIMIT xxxx to mid and max positions and notice how the peaks in volume straighten out as you play harder.
11. Finally, go to the BRIGHT xxxx and turn it halfway up. The BRIGHT filter is a high pass filter that enhances the highest frequencies of the bass, giving it enhanced ambiance and presence.
