To replace a worn or broken lamp socket with the Commercial Electric 82235 3-Way Brushed Nickel Turn xxxx Lamp Socket, please follow the instructions provided in the installation guide:
1. Safety precautions: Before starting the installation, make sure to unplug the lamp or turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse. Test that the power is off before proceeding. If you are unsure about any part of the installation, it is recommended to consult a qualified electrician.
2. Disassemble the old socket: Press where indicated on the shell to disassemble the shell from the cap. Remove the wires from the interior mechanism and loosen the set xxxx (if any) on the bushing of the old cap. Unscrew the cap from the pipe while holding the pipe to prevent it from turning.
3. Install the new socket: Pass the wire through the bushing on the new cap. xxxx the cap onto the pipe and tighten the set xxxx on the cap bushing securely. Ensure that the insulating disk is at the bottom of the cap.
4. Wire connection: Tie an underwriter's knot in the wires (refer to the diagram provided). Pull the knot tight. Strip insulation to expose 1/2" to 5/8" of bare copper strands, being careful not to damage the wire strands or insulation beyond the stripped length. Twist the copper strands of each wire tightly together. Loop the wires clockwise 3/4 turn around the terminal screws. Firmly tighten the screws over the wire loops. Connect the white or ribbed wire (or wire with a color tracer or silver strands) to the silver terminal xxxx , and connect the remaining wire to the brass terminal xxxx . Cut off any loose strands that are not secure under the xxxx heads.
5. Reassemble the socket: Slide the metal shell (with insulating liner inside) over the mechanism so that the switch is seated in the slot(s) on the shell. Push the shell firmly into the cap until it locks securely and evenly into position. To ensure proper locking, push on the metal shell only.
6. Final steps: Plug in the lamp or restore power to the circuit.
