According to the GE Gas-Fired Furnaces Instruction Manual, the air filter in your furnace should be inspected at least every 6 weeks and cleaned or replaced as necessary. Dirty filters are a common cause of inadequate heating or cooling performance and can increase operational costs. If your furnace uses a disposable filter, it should be replaced with the same type and size. If you have a cleanable filter, you can remove excess dirt by shaking the filter and/or using a vacuum cleaner. Wash the filter in soap or detergent water and replace it after it is dry. Cleanable filters do not need to be oiled after washing. It is important to note that a filter must always be in place when the unit is operating. If your air distribution system has a central return air filter-grille, the furnace does not need a filter. Consult with a service technician for more information on filter maintenance for your specific GE gas furnace model.
