According to the user guide, it is recommended to check the threaded nut, or locknut, on a routine basis, at least once a year or before long trips. This is to ensure that the threaded nut is secure, not damaged, and tight enough. When you lower the coupler latch to lock onto your vehicle's 2" ball, you should just barely be able to wiggle the handle in its locked position. If the latch does not go down easily, the nut may be too tight, and it is recommended to loosen the nut a quarter turn. As for replacing the threaded nut, it is suggested to follow the provided guide and use a threaded nylon nut, a drive ratchet, and a 3/4" socket. The specific size of the nut will depend on the generation of axle you have, and you can compare the current nut to the images provided in the user guide to determine the correct replacement nut. It is important to tighten the nut securely into the bolt that is secured to the open coupler, but avoid over-tightening as it can damage the nut.
