To properly install the Ameresco TWIG-MC Solar Kit, please follow the instructions provided in the installation guide. Here is a step-by-step guide:
1. Before beginning the installation, make sure to consider special considerations mentioned in the guide. This includes avoiding shading of the solar modules, proper orientation for maximum solar radiation, and selecting the right load for the system.
2. Familiarize yourself with the theory of operation of the system. Understand the components involved, such as the solar module, batteries, and the system charge controller.
3. Gather the recommended installation tools mentioned in the guide, such as a compass, screwdrivers, socket set, electrical tape, digital multimeter, wire cutters and strippers, combination wrench set, and cable ties.
4. Choose a suitable site location for the solar array. Ensure that there is no shading from towers, poles, buildings, vegetation, or hillside cuts throughout the day. The array should also face True South for maximum energy from the sun.
5. Follow the mechanical assembly instructions provided in the guide. Take precautions to avoid electrical shocks and burns by covering the module front surfaces with an opaque cloth before performing any electrical connections.
6. Install the mounting pole and solar module support structure according to the instructions provided. Set the correct tilt angle and align the structure to True South.
7. Mount the system enclosure below the solar module using the provided pole clamps.
8. Follow the system wiring instructions carefully. Take note of the wire color code (RED for positive, BLACK for negative, GREEN or BARE for ground). Ensure all fuses are removed and circuit breakers are in the OFF position before starting any wiring.
9. Ground the system enclosure using the ground lug provided.
10. Route the pre-wired array cable(s) from the enclosure up the pole to the solar module(s). Install the module interconnect wire if included.
11. Route the load wiring from the system enclosure to the load and secure/seal with an appropriate connector. Terminate the wires to the LOAD terminals and confirm proper polarity.
12. Install the batteries in the enclosure and connect the battery cables, ensuring the correct polarity (Red to positive, Black to negative).
13. Perform a system checkout and commissioning to verify all mechanical and electrical connections. Confirm the array is facing true south, check battery voltage, record array open circuit voltage and short circuit current, and switch on the necessary circuit breakers. Verify proper operation of the load.
14. Complete the system installation checklist and start-up data table provided in the guide.
15. After installation, perform recommended maintenance every 3-6 months to maintain system performance. This includes cleaning the solar array, inspecting the batteries and system wiring, and tightening all accessible wiring connections.
