To connect the Netzer VLX-60 Two Plate Ring Absolute Encoder to your computer for setup and calibration, you will need to follow the steps outlined in the user manual.
1. Electrical Interconnection:
- The encoder has two operational modes: Absolute position over SSi or BiSS-C.
- For SSi / BiSS interface, use the following color code for the wires:
- Clock +: Grey
- Clock -: Blue
- Data -: Yellow
- Data +: Green
- GND (Ground): Black
- +5V (Power supply): Red
2. Electric Encoder Interface:
- Use a 9-pin D-type female connector to connect the encoder to the RS-422/USB converter (CNV-0003 or NanoMIC).
- Follow the pin assignment provided in the manual:
- SSi Clock / NCP RX: Gray (Clock / RX +)
- Clock / RX -: Blue (Clock / RX -)
- SSi Data / NCP TX: Yellow (Data / TX -)
- Data / TX +: Green (Data / TX +)
- GND (Ground): Black
- +5V (Power supply): Red
3. Software Installation:
- Install the Electric Encoder Explorer (EEE) software on your computer.
- Minimum requirements: MS Windows 7/10 (32/64 bit), 4MB minimum memory, USB 2 communication ports, and Windows .NET Framework, V4 minimum.
- Run the Electric Encoder Explorer file found on the Netzer website and follow the installation instructions.
4. Mounting Verification:
- Start the Encoder Explorer software and ensure successful communication with the encoder.
- The status bar should indicate successful communication, and the encoder data should be displayed.
- The position dial display should respond to shaft rotation.
- Perform mounting verification and rotation direction selection before calibration for optimal performance.
5. Calibration:
- The VLX-60 provides several options for calibration.
- 'Push-Button' calibration: Connect a 5V power supply to the encoder and follow the calibration process outlined in the manual.
- Auto-calibration: Refer to the Auto-calibration-feature-user-manual-V01 document for instructions.
- Full manual calibration: After completing the Mounting Verification procedure, start the data acquisition while rotating the shaft. Follow the steps provided in the manual for the calibration process.
6. Setting the Encoder Zero Point:
- Rotate the shaft to the desired zero mechanical position.
- Go into the "Calibration" button in the top menu bar of the software and press "Set UZP."
- Select "Set Current Position" as zero and click "Finish."
7. Jitter Test:
- Perform a jitter test to evaluate the quality of the installation.
- The jitter test presents the reading statistics of absolute position readings (counts) over time.
- Higher jitter may indicate system noise, so ensure the readings are evenly distributed on a thin circle.
