The Crosby PL-N/O Hook Latch Kit is designed to ensure safe and secure usage of hooks. Here are the steps to properly assemble and use the latch kit, as outlined in the provided manual:
1. Before using the hook and latch, always inspect them. Ensure that the latch is not distorted or bent.
2. Make sure the spring will force the latch against the tip of the hook.
3. The load must always be supported by the hook, not the latch. The latch should never support the load.
4. When placing two sling legs in the hook, ensure that the angle between the legs is less than 90°. If the hook or load is tilted, nothing should bear against the bottom of the latch.
5. The latch is intended to retain loose slings or devices under slack conditions. It is not intended to be an anti-fouling device.
6. It is important to follow proper procedures to prevent loads from disengaging from the hook. Failure to do so may result in serious injury or death.
7. If you are using the latch for personnel hoisting by crane or derricks, refer to OSHA Rule 1926.1431(g)(1)(i)(A) and 1926.1501(g)(4)(iv)(B). A Crosby or McKissick Hook with a Positive Locked PL-N/O or S-4320 Latch may be used for lifting personnel.
8. The latch should not be used in applications requiring non-sparking.
To assemble the Model PL-N/O latch on Crosby or McKissick Hooks:
Step 1: Place the hook in an upright position. Position the coils of the spring over the cam with the legs of the spring pointing toward the tip of the hook. The loop of the spring should be positioned down and lying against the hook.
Step 2: Slip the latch over the spring until the two spring legs fit into the grooves located on the inside of the latch housing. The legs of the spring should fit between the gate and the housing.
Steps 3, 4, 5, & 6: Slide the latch housing up the spring legs until the latch clears the hook tip. Rest the latch on the interlocking hook tip, line up the holes in the latch with the hook cam, and insert the bolt through the latch spring and cam. Tighten the self-locking nut on one end of the bolt.
Steps 7 & 8 (For Personnel Lifting): Ensure that the rigging is resting in the bowl of the hook, with the latch in the closed position and the gate locked. Insert the toggle lock pin through the hole and depress the spring until the toggle clears the hole on the other side of the latch.
Step 9 (For Personnel Lifting): Rotate the toggle 90 degrees to secure the pin, ensuring that the toggle is in the closed position.
