To calibrate the Faria 33834 Chesapeake Tachometer Gauge with Hourmeter Diesel, follow these steps:
1. Disconnect the battery during installation to ensure safety.
2. Locate the tachometer at least 18" away from a magnetic compass to avoid interference.
3. Use stranded, insulated wire not lighter than 18AWG that is approved for marine use.
4. For switching diesel tachometers, use the diesel tachometer sender (90901 or equivalent) mounted to the engine at the mechanical drive take-off.
5. Depress and turn the selector switch on the back of the tachometer to the correct position that matches the engine's tachometer drive take-off ratio. Ensure the switch locks into the detent at the correct position.
6. Cut a 3-3/8" diameter hole in the dash and mount the tachometer using the backclamp supplied.
7. Connect a wire to the tachometer stud marked "GND" (ground) and secure it with a nut and lockwasher. Connect the opposite end to the boat's electrical ground.
8. Connect a wire to the tachometer stud marked "BAT" (battery) and secure it with a nut and lockwasher. Connect the opposite end to a 12VDC circuit activated by the ignition switch.
9. Connect a wire to the tachometer stud marked "SIG" (signal) and secure it with a nut and lockwasher.
10. For switching diesel, connect the opposite end to the gray wire of the diesel tachometer sender. Connect the black wire of the diesel tachometer sender to the engine ground.
11. For variable ratio, connect the opposite end to the boat's alternator signal output.
12. Connect the blade terminal adjacent to the twist-out light assembly to the positive "+" side of the boat's instrument lighting circuit.
13. Remove the weather seal plug located in the hole marked "ADJ".
14. Run the engine at a known RPM over 1000 and nearest to cruise RPM as possible. Use a mechanic strobe light or accurate test tachometer to establish RPM.
15. Carefully vary the adjustment pot (through the hole in the case) with a 1.4 mm Allen Hex Key until the tachometer is in agreement with the known RPM. Do not apply excessive pressure to the adjuster to avoid damage.
16. Replace the adjustment pot weather seal plug to complete the calibration.
Note: If your tachometer is equipped with an hourmeter, it will be energized when the engine is running.
