Tuning the dreadbox EREBUS Analog Synthesizer is a crucial step in the assembly process. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to tune the synthesizer:
1. Prepare your workbench: Clean up your working area and use foam to support the module.
2. Connect a patch cable to the CV1 output.
3. Use crock connectors to connect a multimeter to the minijack, with the red wire connected to the tip and the black wire connected to the ground. Set the multimeter to DC voltage measurement.
4. Connect the module to a USB power source. To enter the calibration mode, flip the OMNI/CHAN switch 6 times within the first 10 seconds of powering on the unit.
5. Once in calibration mode, set the GLIDE 1, GLIDE 2, A, D, S, and R knobs (from the Envelope) to about 50%. Set the LEG/OFF switch to the OFF position.
6. Tuning CV1:
- Set the OSC1 octave switch to "32".
- The multimeter will show a measurement of about 3 volts. Use the "GLIDE 1" xxxx to adjust it as close as possible to 3 volts (ideal is 3.000mV).
- Set the octave 1 switch to "16". The multimeter will show about 6 volts. Use the "GLIDE 2" xxxx to adjust it to 6 volts.
- Set the octave 1 switch to "8". The multimeter will show about 9 volts. Use the "A" xxxx to adjust it to 9 volts.
7. Tuning CV2:
- Remove the patch cable from CV1 and connect it to CV2.
- Set the OSC2 octave switch to "16".
- The multimeter will show a measurement of about 3 volts. Use the "D" xxxx to adjust it as close as possible to 3 volts.
- Set the octave 2 switch to "8". The multimeter will show about 6 volts. Use the "S" xxxx to adjust it to 6 volts.
- Set the octave 1 switch to "4". The multimeter will show about 9 volts. Use the "R" xxxx to adjust it to 9 volts.
8. While still in calibration mode, set the LEG/OFF switch to LEG.
9. Remove the CV2 jack and the multimeter. They are no longer needed.
10. Connect the OUT to the TUNER.
11. Set up the synth as follows:
- DO NOT TOUCH the envelope and glide controls.
- Set TUNE, DETUNE, and MIX to exactly 50%.
- Set both VCO waves and SYNC to OFF.
- Set Filter CUTOFF to 100% and Resonance to 0%.
- Set all delay knobs to 0%.
- Set LFO controls to 0%.
- Set Amp A and R to 0%.
- Set Amp level to maximum (or lower if your tuner cannot handle high volume).
12. Use the trimming screwdriver to adjust the trimmers located on the bottom side of the unit named "Scale1," "Tune1," "Scale2," and "Tune2."
13. OSC1:
- Set the OSC1 wave to SAW.
- Continuously press the octave 1 switch from "16" to "8" to switch the notes from A2 to A5.
- Use the scale1 trimmer to have the exact same note each time the switch is flipped.
- Use the TUNE1 trimmer to set the synth to A.
14. OSC2:
- Set the OSC1 wave to OFF and the OSC2 wave to SAW.
- Continuously press the octave 1 switch from "8" to "4" to switch the notes from A1 to A4.
- Use the scale2 trimmer to have the exact same note each time the switch is flipped.
- Use the TUNE2 trimmer to set the synth to A.
15. OSC2 should be one octave higher than OSC1.
16. To save the tuning settings, flip the OMNI/CHAN switch 6 times. You can now power off the synth and finish the assembly.
It is important to follow these steps carefully to ensure accurate tuning of the dreadbox EREBUS Analog Synthesizer.
