According to the tutorial, this knit plastic bag ball took about 4 standard grocery bags to make. However, the exact number of bags you will need may vary depending on the size and thickness of the bags you have. It's always a good idea to have a few extra bags on hand, just in case. You can start with 4 bags and see if that is enough. If you need more, you can easily cut up additional bags and join them together as instructed in Step 5 of the tutorial.
