To mount the Humminbird HELIX 5 Series control head in your boat's dashboard, follow these steps:
1. Plan the Mounting Location: Choose a suitable, flat area of the dashboard that provides adequate distance from electric motors or any equipment that may cause electronic interference. The mounting area should also be protected from waves, shock, vibration, and water. Ensure that the mounting area has a depth of 3 inches (7.62 cm) to accommodate the control head and cables. The area beneath the mounting surface should be well-ventilated, and the location should be easily accessible for all cables to reach the ports on the back of the control head.
2. Cut the In-Dash Mounting Hole: Use the provided In-dash Mounting Template to determine the cutting method for your boat. You can either drill one entry hole away from the main cut line and cut toward the line, or drill corner holes away from the main cut line and cut around the template. Carefully cut along the template's cut line and test the mounting hole by installing the control head to ensure a proper fit. Make any necessary adjustments and clean and deburr the mounting hole.
3. Install the Gasket: Clean the edges of the in-dash mounting hole and the back rim of the control head using rubbing alcohol. Allow the cleaned areas to dry completely. Place the control head, screen facing down, on a stable and level surface. Peel the brown liner from the adhesive backing on the gasket. Hold the sides of the plastic film attached to the gasket with the adhesive side facing down. Carefully align the gasket around the rim of the control head, ensuring it is centered and there are no uneven gaps. Press down on one side of the gasket onto the flat rim of the control head, then press down on the remaining sides. Peel off the plastic film from the gasket.
4. Install the Control Head: Insert the control head through the mounting hole from the front side of the dash. Press down firmly around the sides of the control head for 20 seconds to secure the adhesive.
5. Route and Connect the Cables: Refer to the installation guides included with each hardware component to install power and other optional equipment. Route all cables (power, transducer, accessories) to the control head and insert the connectors into the correct ports on the back of the control head. Avoid mounting the cables where the connectors could be submerged in water or flooded. If cables are installed in a splash-prone area, applying dielectric grease to the inside of the connectors can help prevent corrosion.
