The OZ Optics MBC-PDBC Modulator Bias Controller is a compact device used for bias control in a feedback loop. It offers various features such as ditherless operation, high dynamic range, and fast response. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to use the bias controller:
1. Configuration: Depending on your application, you need to configure the bias controller accordingly. Refer to Figure 1 for modulation with complimentary outputs, Figure 2 for MZ modulator with one output, or Figure 3 for FP Tunable Filter.
2. Pilot Tone Mode: The bias controller uses a pilot tone to accurately bring the modulator to the Quad position. This ensures precise locking of the modulator. By default, the pilot tone mode is enabled.
3. Ditherless Mode: Once the modulator is locked at the Quad position, the bias controller switches to ditherless mode to maintain the lock. This mode eliminates the need for a pilot tone and provides stable operation.
4. Manual Mode: If you wish to disable the pilot tone mode, you can use the manual mode to lock the bias of the modulator or the device under control to another desired working point. You can switch to the manual mode by applying an external voltage to the bias controller.
5. Locking Slope: The locking slope can be adjusted using a jumper on the board. This allows you to control how quickly the bias controller responds to modulator drift. Choose the appropriate locking slope based on your application requirements.
6. Photodiodes: The bias controller has two built-in photodiodes on the board. These photodiodes monitor the modulator's output power and can be used for monitoring and feedback purposes.
7. External Reference Voltage: If required, an external reference voltage can be applied to the bias controller. This should be specified at the time of order.
8. Alarming LED: The bias controller features an alarming LED that indicates overtuning. If the bias is pulled too far from the desired working point, the LED will alert you.
