To set up and operate the Xylem 4760 Eclipse Purge and Trap Concentrator for the analysis of volatile organic compounds in soils and waters using the USEPA Method 8260, follow these steps:
1. Ensure that the Eclipse 4760 P&T Sample Concentrator is properly assembled and connected to the necessary gas and sample lines.
2. Set the trap to #10 trap, which consists of Tenax® / Silica gel / CMS.
3. Use Zero Grade Helium as the purge gas at a flow rate of 40 mL/min.
4. Set the purge time to 11 minutes.
5. Set the sparge mount temperature and sample temperature to 45 ˚C.
6. Set the desorb time to 0.5 minutes.
7. Set the bake time to 4 minutes.
8. During the purge, keep the OI #10 trap temperature at ambient temperature. During desorb pre-heat, set it to 180 ˚C, and during desorb, set it to 190 ˚C. During the bake, set it to 210 ˚C.
9. Manage water at 120 ˚C during the purge, ambient temperature during desorb, and 240 ˚C during the bake.
10. Set the transfer line temperature to 120 ˚C - 150 ˚C.
11. Set the six-port valve temperature to 120 ˚C - 150 ˚C.
For the 4100 Water/Soil Sample Processor, follow these steps:
1. Use Zero Grade Nitrogen as the system gas.
2. Use Zero Grade Helium as the purge gas.
3. Set the LV20 pressure to 8.0 psi.
4. Use the default loop-based time settings.
5. Set the rinse water temperature to 80 ˚C.
6. Set the soil sample transfer temperature to 150 ˚C.
7. Set the soil oven temperature to 150 ˚C.
8. Set the soil lift station temperature to 45 ˚C.
9. Use the provided sample process methods for different sample types (Waters Only, Soils Only, Blanks Only).
10. Follow the specified needle rinse volumes and purge/desorb times.
11. Use hot rinse water.
12. Set the water stir time to 0.0 minutes and water settle time to 5 seconds.
13. Add water to the soil vial using the specified number of loops (1 x 5 mL).
14. Enable soil pre-heat stir and set the soil pre-heat/purge temperature to 45.0 ˚C.
15. Stir the soil during the purge.
16. Ensure that the initial volume in the vial is 5 mL and the final volume is 10 mL.
For the Agilent 5975C Mass Spectrometer:
1. Set the mode to Scan 35 - 300 amu.
2. Set the scans per second to 5.19.
3. Set the solvent delay to 1.40 minutes.
4. Set the transfer line temperature to 240 ˚C.
5. Set the source temperature to 230 ˚C.
6. Set the quadrupole temperature to 150 ˚C.
7. Use a 6 mm draw out plate.
