To properly apply the ZOLL OneStep CPR A/A Resuscitation Electrodes, follow these steps:
1. Preconnecting the electrodes: Do not open the electrode packaging until you are ready to use them. Inspect the packaging for any damage or expiration date. Attach the electrode connector to the ZOLL OneStep cable or Multi-Function cable. Open the electrode package by pulling it apart at the yellow arrow. The self-test connection will disengage once the electrode is removed from the liner.
2. Skin preparation: Remove any excess chest hair, and if necessary, clip it to maximize gel-to-skin contact. It is recommended to clip the hair instead of shaving to avoid tiny microabrasions that can cause patient discomfort during pacing. Ensure that the skin is clean and dry under the electrode. Remove any debris, ointments, or skin preps with water (and mild soap if needed). Wipe off excess moisture or diaphoresis with a dry cloth.
3. Electrode application: Apply one edge of the electrode securely to the patient's skin. Smoothly "roll" the electrode from that edge to the other, ensuring there are no pockets of air trapped between the gel and the skin. Excessive hair or poor adherence can inhibit good coupling (contact) and may lead to arcing and skin burns.
4. Electrode placement: The placement of the electrodes depends on the intended use.
- Anterior-Anterior (Apex/Lateral-Sternum): This placement is recommended for defibrillation, ventricular cardioversion, and ECG monitoring only. It is not recommended for noninvasive pacing. For male patients, apply the Apex/Lateral electrode so that the top of the gel treatment area aligns with the bottom of the pectoral muscle. For female patients, position the electrode under the breast. Avoid any contact between the xxxx and the gel treatment area to prevent burning.
- Sternum: Align the CPR sensor with the sternal notch. Apply the Sternum electrode on the patient's upper right torso.
- Atrial Cardioversion Anterior/Posterior Electrode Placement: For the Back Posterior electrode, place it to the left of the spine just below the scapula at the heart level. For the Front electrode, apply it to the upper right torso on the third intercostal space, midclavicular line. If the CPR sensor is on the electrode, align it with the sternal notch.
- Noninvasive Temporary Pacing: The OneStep Pacing function is only compatible with ZOLL R Series defibrillators and is intended for emergency pacing only. Replace the electrodes after 24 hours of use or 8 hours of pacing to maximize patient benefit. Pacing longer than 30 minutes may cause burns to the skin. Periodically check the electrode site to ensure good adhesion. For pacing times exceeding 2 hours, ZOLL recommends using Pro-padz with liquid gel.
It is important to follow the instructions in the manual carefully to ensure proper electrode application and usage.
