To install the Johnson K-01.1331.0640B Kevlar Skid Plate, please follow the steps below:
1. Start by positioning the canoe upside down and measuring 14" from the edge of the back deck to the bottom of the canoe. Mark this location as the starting point for the narrow end of the skid plate.
2. Lay a skid plate felt strip (A) on the marked location and hold it in place with two pieces of tape. Mask a 1/8" border around the skid plate with masking tape.
3. Remove the skid plate (A) and sand the masked area using the provided 40 grit sandpaper (D). Ensure that the surface is thoroughly sanded, paying attention to any shiny areas that may indicate missed spots. Wipe the sanded area clean of debris with a clean dry cloth.
4. If you are working with a polyethylene canoe, follow these additional steps: Remove the tape outline and light a propane torch. Identify the inner blue cone of the flame and bring the tip of the inner cone briefly into contact with the sanded surface. Sweep back and forth over the sanded area, ensuring you do not shine, melt, or blacken the surface. Reattach the tape outline.
5. Tape the edge of the drip cover to the tape outline, making sure not to overlap into the working area and ensuring the tape adheres all around the outline to prevent runs onto the canoe hull.
6. Wear gloves and mix the resin by pouring all of Can-B Hardener (C) into Can-A Resin (B). Stir thoroughly with a stirring stick, making sure to scrape the inner sides of the can to achieve a uniform mix. Note that the resin working time is 20 minutes at 70 degrees F and less at higher temperatures.
7. Using a disposable paintbrush, apply the mixed resin to the sanded area, covering it completely.
8. Carefully lay the Kevlar Felt (A) in place and pat it firmly with your gloved hand or paintbrush to wet the felt with the resin underneath.
9. Apply enough resin to completely wet through the felt, using the brush to work out any trapped air from under the felt.
10. Brush firmly and evenly, feathering the edges of the felt to achieve a level surface. Once the resin has gelled enough to not run (approximately 15 minutes), remove the drip cover and tape outline. You can smooth the edges of the resin surface with a gloved finger or wedge for uniform adhesion. For a smoother finish, you can also lay plastic wrap over the positioned skid plate.
11. Allow the skid plate to cure for 24 hours. If desired, the resin may be lightly sanded after curing for a smooth finish. Do not attempt to use the remaining mixed resin for the second skid plate.
12. Repeat the above instructions for the other end of the boat using the remaining felt and cans of resin.
Please note that these instructions are a summary and should be followed in conjunction with the provided manual for the Johnson K-01.1331.0640B Kevlar Skid Plate.
