To properly use the Crosby L150 Lever Type Load Binders, follow these instructions:
1. Hook the load binder to the chain in a way that allows you to operate it while standing on the ground. Ensure that the load binder's handle can be pulled downward to tighten the chain. Be mindful of any slippery conditions such as ice, snow, rain, or oil that may affect your footing. Make sure your footing is secure.
2. It is strongly recommended by The Crosby Group LLC not to use a handle extender or cheater pipe with the lever type load binder. If you find that you cannot obtain sufficient leverage using the lever type load binder alone, it is advised to use a ratchet type binder instead.
3. If you choose to disregard the recommendation and use a cheater pipe, it must fit closely to the handle and slide down until the handle projections are contacted. The pipe should be secured to the handle, for example, with a pin, to prevent it from flying off if you lose control. However, using a cheater pipe can cause deformation and failure of the chain and load binder due to increased leverage.
4. After tightening the chain, check the position of the load binder handle. Ensure that it is in the locked position and that its bottom side touches the chain link.
5. Chain tension may decrease during transport due to load shifting. To ensure the load binder remains in the proper position, secure the handle to the chain by wrapping the loose end of the chain around the handle and the tight chain, or tie the handle to the chain with soft wire.
6. When releasing the load binder, be aware that there is a significant amount of energy in the stretched chain. This will cause the handle to move very quickly and with great force when unlatched. Move the handle with caution and keep your body clear to avoid injury.
7. Never use a cheater pipe or handle extender to release the handle. Instead, use a steel bar to pry under the handle, staying out of the path of the handle as it moves upward.
8. If you choose to release the handle by hand, use an open hand positioned under the handle and push upward. Do not close your hand around the handle. Always keep yourself out of the path of the moving handle.
