Proper cleaning and maintenance are essential for the efficient operation and longevity of the Groen NGB-3E Steam Boiler. Here are the steps to clean and maintain the boiler:
1. Daily Draining: After the boiler has been turned off and cooled to about 170ºF, open the manual drain valve to empty the boiler. Close the valve once the boiler has drained completely.
2. Monthly Cleaning: It is recommended to clean the boiler at least once a month to prevent the accumulation of lime and scale. Follow these steps:
a. Turn off the water supply to the boiler and allow it to cool overnight.
b. Remove one of the 1" NPT pipe plugs from the front of the boiler using a 1/2" hardened square wrench extension.
c. Pour 32 ounces of Groen Delimer Descaler (or equivalent) into the boiler.
d. Replace the pipe plug, ensuring it is tightened securely with pipe joint compound.
e. Turn on the water supply to allow water to fill the boiler.
f. When the RESET light comes on, press the start switch to initiate the cleaning process.
g. Allow the boiler pressure to develop and let it stand for approximately 15 minutes.
h. If there are steamer cavities or compartments, set the steamer timers for 10 minutes. After the timers sound, turn them off, open the doors, and remove fan baffle partitions. Rinse them with clean water and wipe out the steamer chambers using a degreaser and nylon pad if necessary. Replace the fan baffle partitions and close the steamer doors.
i. Turn the on/off switch off and slowly open the manual drain valve to drain the boiler.
j. Close the manual drain valve once the boiler has drained completely.
k. Turn the on/off switch to "ON" to fill the boiler with water.
l. After the RESET light comes on, press the start switch to restart the boiler.
m. Allow the boiler pressure to develop, and it is ready for normal operation.
3. Periodic Inspection: It is recommended to have a qualified service technician inspect the boiler at least once a year. The inspection should include checking electrical wires and connections, cleaning the inside of the control enclosure, and adjusting the pilot burner if necessary.
4. Weekly Checks: Conduct weekly checks to ensure proper operation and prevent downtime. Check the pressure gauge operation, water level in the gauge, strainer in the water feed line, air inlets for gas burner jets, pilot burner flame, and drain piping.
5. Component Replacement: If any parts need to be replaced, ensure that the gas and electrical power to the unit are completely shut off before proceeding. Only authorized service representatives should perform component replacements.
