1. Mechanical Installation:

2. Hydraulic Installation:
- Before connecting the pump set to the hydraulic lines, make sure that all hydraulic lines in the steering system are clean and free of contaminants.
- Connect the output lines (A and B) of the pump set to the main steering lines (port and starboard) on the vessel.
- Connect the fill/interconnect line to the header tank or helm pump case. This line allows for makeup oil and venting of any air that may enter the pump set from the steering lines.
- Use a flex hose for all three lines to prevent pump noise from being transmitted to the steering system.
- It is recommended to use shut-off or isolation valves for all three lines for maintenance purposes.
3. Electrical Installation:
- The motor of the pump set is a permanent magnet-style motor with two leads.
- Connect these leads to the autopilot pump driver junction box (processor).
- If needed, the direction of the pump set can be reversed by reversing the polarity of these two leads.
4. Preparation and Testing:
- Flush the hydraulic steering system to ensure clean and contamination-free oil throughout.
- After making all connections, open all valves (if installed) and allow sufficient time for the pump and lines to fill with oil.
- Operate the pump set and note the time it takes for the rudder to move from hard over to hard over (HOH). This time may vary depending on the type of steering system and autopilot used.
5. Testing:
- Set the autopilot to manual mode and operate the pump set to check if the rudder moves in the correct direction.
- If the rudder moves in the opposite direction, reverse the two electrical leads to the motor.
- Most new autopilot systems will perform this test during their dockside set-up procedures.
