To clean your Hamilton Beach 40616 Electric Percolator, follow these steps:
1. After each use, unplug the cord from the outlet and let the percolator cool before cleaning.
2. Remove the lid, basket, spreader, and stem from the percolator.
3. Wash these parts in hot, soapy water. You can also place them in the dishwasher if desired.
4. Rinse all parts thoroughly and dry them.
5. Make sure the washer at the bottom of the stem remains loose. If there are any coffee grounds lodged in this area, remove them under running water or with a wooden pick. Rinse and dry the parts.
6. Fill the percolator halfway with hot water and add a drop of liquid dishwashing detergent.
7. Use a sponge to clean the inside of the percolator, including the heating unit well. It is important to properly clean this part to maintain the percolator's operation. Do not immerse the percolator in water.
8. Drain the soapy water and rinse the percolator with hot water. Pour the water through the spout to clean it as well. Repeat with another hot water rinse.
9. Dry the percolator and clean the outside with a damp cloth. Do not use abrasive scouring pads or cleansers.
10. Store the percolator with the cover off.
If you need to remove mineral deposits and buildup, follow these additional steps every other week:
1. Fill the percolator with 6 cups (1.5 L) of cold water and 6 cups (1.5 L) of white vinegar.
2. Assemble the percolator with the stem, basket, spreader, and lid.
3. Plug in the percolator and let it go through a complete perk cycle.
4. After perking has stopped, let the percolator sit for another 15 minutes.
5. Unplug the percolator and drain it. Let it cool before cleaning it according to the steps mentioned above.
