To determine the best location on your boat's transom to install the Humminbird Side Imaging transducer, you should consider a few factors. First, you want to find an area on the transom that is relatively free of turbulent water. Turbulence is generated by the weight of the boat and the thrust of the propeller(s). It is best to locate the transducer at least 15" to the side of the propeller(s) to avoid turbulence.
To find a turbulence-free area, you can view the transom while the boat is moving. Look for smooth, flat areas on the transom that are free of protrusions or ribs. Stepped hulls may allow you to mount the transducer on the step, but avoid mounting it behind a step to prevent the transducer from popping out of the water at higher speeds.
For Side Imaging transducers, it is important to ensure that nothing obstructs the view of the side-looking beams. Mount the transducer parallel to the waterline for accurate side beam display.
If your transom is behind the propeller(s) and it is impossible to find an area clear from turbulence, you may need to consider a different mounting technique or transducer type. You can refer to the FAQ section on the Humminbird website or contact Humminbird Technical Support for further assistance.
Remember to avoid mounting the transducer too close to trailer bunks or rollers if you plan to trailer your boat.
