Setting up and using the Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control is a simple process. Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. Mount the camera on a tripod or place it on a stable, level surface.
2. For D70, D70s, D80, and D90 users: Press the button and rotate the main command dial until "delayed remote" or "quick response remote" is displayed in the control panel. For D50 users, press the button and rotate the main command dial to access the options.
3. For D60 users: Press the camera's Menu button, go to the Custom Setting menu, select #04 - Release Mode, and choose either the 2S Delayed Remote or Quick Response remote option.
4. For D3000 and D5000 users: The option is found in the Release Mode list. Refer to page 38 (D3000) or page 65 (D5000) in your user manual for specific instructions.
5. Frame your photograph. In autofocus (AF) mode, you can use the camera's shutter-release button to check focus, but only the shutter-release button on the ML-L3 remote control can be used to release the shutter.
6. To ensure correct exposure in modes other than M, cover the viewfinder eyepiece with your hand or the supplied DK-5 eyepiece cap before pressing the shutter-release button. This prevents light from entering via the viewfinder and interfering with the autoexposure operation.
7. Aim the transmitter on the ML-L3 at the infrared receiver on the camera and press the shutter-release button on the ML-L3. Make sure there is no obstruction between the transmitter and the infrared receiver, especially when using the remote outdoors. The maximum operating distance of the ML-L3 is 5 meters directly in front of the camera.
8. To return to single-frame or continuous shooting mode, turn the camera off or rotate the mode dial to another setting. The shooting mode in effect before the remote control mode was selected will be restored if no operations are performed for the time selected for Custom Setting 25. The default setting is one minute.
