To connect the SE Electronics DM3 Dynamite Active Direct Box to your instrument, follow these steps:
1. Make sure the DM3 is powered by connecting it to a Phantom power source that provides 48 Volts according to IEC 61938.
2. Locate the Ultra Hi-Z input on the DM3. This input is designed to preserve the sonic character of your instrument. Instruments with passive pickups, such as electric guitars or stringed instruments with piezo pickups, will benefit from the DM3's high input impedance of 10 MOhms.
3. Use a balanced cable with studio-grade connectors to connect your instrument to the DM3's Ultra Hi-Z input. Plug one end of the cable into your instrument's output jack and the other end into the DM3's input jack.
4. If your instrument has a high output level, such as electric guitars with active pickups, keyboards, or drum machines, you can use the DM3's attenuation pad to reduce the signal level. The DM3 has a three-position attenuation switch that allows you to reduce the signal by 15 or 30 dB. Use a miniature screwdriver to change the switch's settings.
5. If you are experiencing unwanted hum or buzz, you can use the DM3's ground lift switch to break any ground loops. The ground lift switch has three positions: Off, On, and On+. In the Off position, the ground lift is deactivated. In the On position, ground loops are broken, reducing noise. The On+ position engages innovative electronic circuitry that can help reduce unwanted noise in both low and high-frequency ranges. Please note that the effectiveness of the ground lift switch depends on various factors, such as your individual setup and radio frequency environment.
6. Once your instrument is connected to the DM3, you can connect the DM3 to a Phantom-powered XLR input on your preamp or mixer using a standard XLR cable. The DM3 does not require an extra cable for this connection.
