(02) provided by the Petroleum and Gas Inspectorates, the gas installation in a recreational vehicle, such as a DIY caravan, must ensure the safety of persons and avoid any hazards to the vehicle or its contents. The requirements of clause 6.3.2 of the AS/NZS5601.2:2020 Gas Installations state that a cooking appliance installed beneath an aftermarket lid or cover is considered a stowed appliance.
If you have a gas cooking appliance in your DIY caravan that can be covered by a lift-out or hinged workbench or cover while still connected to the gas supply, it is considered a stowed appliance. However, there are certain requirements that need to be met. The gas supply to the appliance must be disconnected to allow the appliance to be stowed. This means that the gas flow should be prevented when the appliance is covered or stowed.
For external slide-out kitchens, if the gas supply to the appliance needs to be disconnected to retract the kitchen within the body of the vehicle, the requirements of clause 6.3.2 are considered satisfied. For example, if your slide-out kitchen is connected to the gas supply via a bayonet connection, the gas hose assembly must be disconnected to retract the kitchen.
It is important to note that a stainless-steel wind shield or fold-out kitchen bench extension is not considered a lid or cover in the context of the note to clause 6.3.2. The appliance is not considered stowed until it is retracted within the body of the vehicle for travel. However, it is recommended to provide appropriate permanent and durable labels warning against hot surfaces and operating appliances without windshields and benches in the correct position.
Please refer to the compliance information sheet (02) and the AS/NZS5601.2:2020 Gas Installations for more detailed information and specific requirements for stowing or covering gas cooking appliances in DIY caravans.
