To prepare the cable for installation using the 3M Cold Shrink QS-III Splicing Kit 5776A-MT, follow these steps:
1. Prepare the cable according to your company's standard procedures. Allow the cable ends to overlap by up to 10 inches (254 mm).
2. Remove 27 1/2 inches (699 mm) of the cable jacket, plus half of the overlap from Cable X.
3. Remove 22 1/2 inches (572 mm) of the cable jacket, plus half of the overlap from Cable Y.
4. Keep a 17-inch (432 mm) piece of cable jacket removed from Cable X and a 12-inch (305 mm) piece of jacket from Cable Y for later use.
5. If the cable is armored, remove the cable armor, leaving 1 1/2 inches (38.1 mm) of armor exposed beyond the jacket end.
6. Remove any cable binder, if present, at the end of the jacket or armor and discard.
7. Fold the cable fillers and ground wire(s) back over the cable jacket end. Do not cut them off.
8. Temporarily hold the fillers and ground wire(s) back by banding them to the cable jacket using the Scotch Super 33+ Vinyl Tape included in the kit.
9. Cut the phase conductors to the appropriate length. Conductors of Cable X should be 27 1/2 inches (699 mm) when measured from the cable jacket end or 26 inches (660 mm) when measured from the end of the armor. Conductors of Cable Y should be 22 1/2 inches (572 mm) when measured from the cable jacket end or 21 inches (533 mm) when measured from the end of the armor.
10. Bind the metallic shields of both Cable X and Cable Y conductors with a copper tape strip at a point 10 1/4 inches (260 mm) from the end of each conductor.
11. Remove the metallic shields to copper tape binding.
12. If the conductors are individually jacketed, remove the individual jackets a distance of 13 1/4 inches (337 mm) from the end of each conductor.
13. Remove the cable semi-conductive insulation shields from the conductors of both Cable X and Cable Y a distance of 7 1/4 inches (184 mm) from the end of each conductor.
14. Remove the cable insulation from the conductor ends of both Cable X and Cable Y. Remove the cable insulation for 1/2 connector length plus an allowance for increases in connector length due to crimping. The insulation removal length should not exceed 2 7/8 inches (73 mm) from the conductor end.
15. Do not install connectors at this time.
