To prepare the cable before installing the 3M 5797A-MT Cold Shrink QS-III Splice Kit, follow these steps:

1. Allow the cable ends to overlap by up to 10 inches (254 mm).
2. Remove 33 inches (838 mm) of cable jacket, plus half of the overlap from Cable X. Remove 25 inches (635 mm) of cable jacket, plus half of the overlap from Cable Y. Keep a 22-inch (559 mm) piece of cable jacket removed from Cable X and a 14-inch (356 mm) piece of jacket from Cable Y for later use.
3. If the cable is armored, leave 1 1/2 inches (37 mm) of armor exposed beyond the jacket end. Remove any cable binder at the end of the jacket or armor and discard. Fold the cable fillers and ground wire(s) back over the cable jacket end and temporarily hold them in place by banding them to the cable jacket using Scotch Super 33+ Vinyl Tape.
4. Cut the phase cores of Cable X to a length of 33 inches (838 mm) when measured from the cable jacket end or 31 1/2 inches (800 mm) when measured from the end of the armor. Cut the phase cores of Cable Y to a length of 25 inches (635 mm) when measured from the cable jacket end or 23 1/2 inches (597 mm) when measured from the end of the armor.
5. Bind the metallic shields of both Cable X and Cable Y cores with a copper tape strip at a point 11 1/2 inches (292 mm) from the end of each conductor. Remove the metallic shields to the copper tape binding. If the phase cores are individually jacketed, remove the individual jackets a distance of 15 inches (381 mm) from the end of each conductor.
6. Remove the cable semi-conductive insulation screen from the cores of both Cable X and Cable Y for a distance of 8 1/2 inches (216 mm) from the end of each conductor.
7. Remove the cable insulation from the conductor ends of both Cable X and Cable Y. Remove the insulation for 1/2 connector length plus an allowance for increases in connector length due to crimping. The insulation removal length should not exceed 3 1/4 inches (83 mm) from the conductor end.
