To prepare the cable for installation of the 3M 5786A-MT Cold Shrink QS-III Splice Kit, follow these steps:
1. Follow your company's standard procedures for cable preparation.
2. Allow the cable ends to overlap by up to 10 inches (254 mm).
3. Remove 29 inches (737 mm) of cable jacket, plus half of the overlap from Cable X.
4. Remove 24 inches (610 mm) of cable jacket, plus half of the overlap from Cable Y.
5. Keep an 18-inch (457 mm) piece of cable jacket removed from Cable X and a 13-inch (330 mm) piece of jacket from Cable Y for later use.
6. If the cable is armored, remove the cable armor, leaving 1 1/2 inches (37 mm) of armor exposed beyond the jacket end.
7. Remove any cable binder at the end of the jacket or armor and discard it.
8. Fold the cable fillers and ground wire(s) back over the cable jacket end, but do not cut them off.
9. Temporarily hold the fillers and ground wire(s) back by banding them to the cable jacket using the Scotch® 33+ Vinyl Tape included in the kit.
10. Cut the phase conductors to the appropriate length. Conductors of Cable X should be 29 inches (737 mm) when measured from the cable jacket end or 27 1/2 inches (699 mm) when measured from the end of the armor. Conductors of Cable Y should be 24 inches (610 mm) when measured from the cable jacket end or 22 1/2 inches (572 mm) when measured from the end of the armor.
11. Bind the metallic shields of both Cable X and Cable Y conductors with a copper tape strip at a point 10 1/4 inches (260 mm) from the end of each conductor.
12. Remove the metallic shields to copper tape binding.
13. If the conductors are individually jacketed, remove the individual jackets a distance of 13 3/4 inches (349 mm) from the end of each conductor.
14. Remove the cable semi-conductive insulation shields from the conductors of both Cable X and Cable Y a distance of 7 1/4 inches (185 mm) from the end of each conductor.
15. Remove the cable insulation from the conductor ends of both Cable X and Cable Y. Remove the cable insulation for 1/2 connector length plus an allowance for increases in connector length due to crimping. The insulation removal length should not exceed 2 1/4 inches (57 mm) from the conductor end. Do not install connectors at this time.
Note: It is important to ensure that the cables are within the Insulation OD Range of the splice kit.
