To properly install the shadow-caster SCM-Series thermostat, follow these steps:
1. Choose a mounting location: The thermostat should be installed on a flat surface area that is frequently submerged, splashed, or sprayed. Avoid mounting it on the bottom of the hull to prevent damage and drag. Mount it as low as possible for optimal water penetration and cooling.
2. Use the provided template: The provided template can be used to find an appropriate mounting location. Make sure it matches the mounting holes on the thermostat. Mark the center drill location with a pencil and remove the template.
3. Drill a hole for the cable: Drill a 5/8" diameter hole for the cable in the center hole location only, as shown on the template.
4. Use a foam or rubber spacer for galvanic isolation: If mounting to an aluminum hull, use a foam or rubber spacer to prevent corrosion. For more information, visit the shadow-caster website.
5. Feed the cable through the hull: Feed the cable through the hull into the boat.
6. Mark and drill the mounting holes: With the thermostat against the hull in the desired mounting location, use the actual mounting holes of the thermostat to mark one mounting hole. Drill that hole with an appropriately sized drill. Then, mark and drill the last mounting hole.
7. Check mounting hole alignment: Check the mounting hole alignment with the thermostat against the hull. If the mounting holes are not easily visible through the holes in the thermostat, ream the center hole for the cable until the thermostat can be aligned with the mounting holes.
8. Apply sealant: Place a sufficient amount of silicone or 3M 4200 marine sealant on the hull around all three holes to seal them against the thermostat's base plate. Fill the xxxx holes with sealant as well.
9. Mount the thermostat: Use the provided screws (or passivated 316 stainless steel screws) to mount the thermostat to the hull. Do not use bronze screws to avoid galvanic corrosion.
10. Install wiring: Route the wire through the boat in a manner that keeps it out of standing water and protected from excessive heat or abrasion. Route the wire to a switch rated at a minimum of twice the continuous current draw. The red wire is positive, the black wire is ground. Make sure to wire the lights through a fuse or circuit breaker to prevent fire hazards. The blue wire is the PWM control wire for strobing and dimming functions.
