Before applying Rust-Oleum SRT-09 Stops Rust Textured Sprays, it is important to properly prepare the surface. Here are the steps to follow:
1. Remove all dirt, grease, oil, salt, and chemical contaminants from the surface by washing it with a commercial detergent or other suitable cleaning method.
2. Rinse the surface with fresh water and allow it to thoroughly dry.
3. Remove any loose paint and rust using a wire brush or sandpaper.
4. If the surface has been previously coated, make sure it is in good condition and sound. Smooth, hard, or glossy finishes should be scarified by sanding to create a surface profile.
Please note that if you scrape, sand, or remove old paint from any surface, you may release lead paint dust, which is toxic. It is important to take proper precautions, such as wearing a NIOSH approved respirator and cleaning up carefully with a HEPA vacuum and wet mop. For more information on lead exposure and safety measures, you can contact the National Lead Information Hotline at 1-800-424-LEAD or visit www.epa.gov/lead.
It is also recommended to use a Stops Rust Primer before applying the textured sprays, especially on bare wood and metal surfaces, as it provides added corrosion protection, superior adhesion, and hiding. Rust-Oleum offers two types of primers: Rusty Metal Primer (7769830) and Clean Metal Primer (7780830).
