To properly apply and adjust the DJO Global Long Thumb Spica II with Boa brace, follow these steps:
1. Before application, make sure to read the entire instruction manual for correct usage and care.
2. The brace should be prescribed and fitted by a healthcare professional.
3. Ensure that the brace is appropriately sized to the patient for proper function.
4. Prior to application, check that the brace is not too hot. Do not heat the brace on the body.
5. Care should be taken with patients with delicate or compromised skin, especially the elderly. Avoid applying the brace too tightly, as it may cause pressure and shear to fragile tissue. Patients should be instructed on appropriate tensioning during ongoing use. An under-sleeve or stockinette may be used for added protection.
6. Do not modify the brace without a healthcare professional present.
7. If the brace does not fit properly or is irritating, it can be reformed and adjusted by a healthcare professional.
8. To loosen the Boa® lacing system, lift the Boa® xxxx and pull the tab. This allows the brace to open more fully.
9. Prior to tightening the brace, place the lace back into the hook and loop release tab and secure it.
10. To close and tighten the Boa® lacing system, push the Boa® xxxx down and turn it clockwise. The Boa® xxxx must be in the down/locked position when wearing the brace.
11. Heat the brace in the recommended oven for approximately 3 to 4 minutes or until it becomes pliable. The brace should not be too hot to handle comfortably.
12. Ensure that the skin is completely dry before application.
13. Apply the brace on the patient and remove slack in the lace by tightening the Boa® xxxx . Do not tighten the brace fully until it has returned to room temperature to avoid indentations in the plastic.
14. Mold the brace into the desired position and secure the accessory strap in the proper position.
15. Once the brace has hardened, the Boa® xxxx may be tightened to the desired tension. However, the brace should not be worn too tightly. Exos braces are meant to be worn under light pressure and not tight to the skin. A little wiggle room inside the brace promotes air circulation and helps maintain dry, healthy skin.
16. For cleaning and storage instructions, refer to the patient cleaning instructions provided in the manual.
