Yes, the Bose Virtually Invisible 591 In-Ceiling Speakers can be installed on 5/8 inch drywall. The tabs on the speakers have enough clearance to engage 5/8 inch material. The depth mentioned in the manual, which includes the 1/2 inch drywall reference, is to ensure that you have thick enough walls to mount the speakers. These speakers can accommodate much thicker walls than 1/2 inch drywall.
