To set up the NHT CS-10 10-inch Long Throw Powered Subwoofer, follow these steps:
1. Unpack the subwoofer: Remove the subwoofer from its packaging and locate the rubber cones included in the box. These cones can be screwed into the threaded inserts on the bottom of the subwoofer to provide stability on wood or tile floors. If you have a heavy carpet, it is recommended to use metal cones for added stability.
2. Placement: Choose a suitable location for the subwoofer. Avoid placing it directly against a wall or any other surface to prevent overheating. Experiment with different placements in your room to find the best balance of bass output and clarity. Placing the subwoofer near a room boundary or corner can increase bass output, but may result in a boomy sound. Placing it near a single wall or farther away from room boundaries can improve articulation and clarity.
3. Connect the subwoofer: On the back of the subwoofer, you will find the following connections:
- Line Input: Use the L and R line level RCA inputs to connect the subwoofer to your audio system. Use RCA cables to connect the subwoofer to the corresponding outputs on your receiver or preamplifier.
- Power Inlet: Connect the subwoofer to a power outlet using the provided power cable.
4. Controls:
- Volume Control: Adjust the volume of the subwoofer independently of the main speakers. Start with the volume control set to its lowest position and gradually increase it until you achieve a balanced sound.
- Low Pass Filter: Set the low-pass crossover control to match the frequency range of your main left and right speakers. This ensures a smooth transition between the subwoofer and the main speakers.
- Subwoofer Phase Selector: Set the phase of the subwoofer to either 0° (normal phase) or 180° (reverse phase) to achieve the smoothest bass response in your system.
5. Power on and Auto Standby: The subwoofer does not have a power switch. It features an auto standby mode that activates when no signal is present for 20 minutes. When a signal is received, the subwoofer turns on automatically. There is no need to turn the subwoofer on and off manually.
6. Fine-tuning: Play familiar music and make small adjustments to the volume and settings to achieve the desired sound balance. Avoid setting extreme volume levels or excessive bass, treble, or equalizer boosts to prevent speaker damage.
