To unpack and set up the NHT N-C 4 Black 3-Way Floor-standing Tower Speaker, follow these steps:
1. Unpacking the speaker:
- Open the speaker box and locate the adhesive-backed, rubber bump-ons included in the carton.
- Stick these bump-ons on the bottom of the speaker near the four corners to prevent sliding and protect the bottom surface from scratches.
- If you have the C-4 model, which is larger and heavier, you may need assistance to unpack it due to its weight and size.
2. Setting up the C-4 model:
- Position the C-4 speaker on its back and prop up the bottom section with some of the foam packing materials.
- Attach the stabilizers to the bottom of the speaker using the supplied machine screws and a Philips head screwdriver.
- The stabilizers for the C-4 also include rubber cones, which are ideal for use on wood or tile floors. Adjust them if you have an uneven floor and use the locknut to secure them. For heavy carpet flooring, it is recommended to use metal cones for added stability.
3. Placement:
- For the best sound quality, place the speakers at close to ear level.
- The C-1 model is a 2-way design and benefits from a slight "toe-in" towards the listening position for improved stereo imaging.
- The rest of the C-series speakers (C-3, C-4, and C-LCR) are 3-way designs and can be placed without any toe-in angle.
- Experiment with speaker placement to find the sound you prefer. Moving speakers closer to walls or corners increases mid-bass output but may result in artificial "boominess." Placing them farther away from room boundaries decreases bass output but improves stereo imaging and detail.
- The recommended distance from the rear wall is 6" - 12" if possible.
- Soft furnishings tend to absorb mid and high frequencies, while hard surfaces and sparse furnishings have the opposite effect.
4. Connections:
- Before connecting the speakers to your amplifier or receiver, turn off the AC power to avoid potential damage.
- The terminals on the back of the speakers accept raw wire, banana plugs, or spade lugs.
- Prepare the wires by stripping 1/4" - 3/8" of insulation from the ends and tightly twist the exposed strands.
- Connect the speakers to your amplifier or receiver, ensuring that the Positive (+) terminal on both the amplifier and the speaker is connected to the same half of the wire pair. The Negative (-) terminals should also be connected in the same manner.
- Make sure there are no stray strands from one terminal touching the other terminals before powering up the receiver/amplifier.
