Seasoning the cast iron cooking grates on the Char-Griller E1515 Patio Pro Charcoal Grill is an important step to protect the grates and enhance the flavor of your meals. Here are the steps to season the cast iron cooking grates:
1. Lightly coat all interior surfaces, including the grates, grills, and inside of the barrel, with vegetable oil. You can use a spray vegetable oil for easier application, but make sure not to use it near hot coals or fire.
2. Build a medium-sized fire on the fire grate. Always put charcoal on top of the fire grate and not directly into the bottom of the grill.
3. After the coals ash over, spread them out and replace the cooking grates. Close the lid and heat the grill at approximately 250°F for two hours.
4. Remove the grates from the grill using oven mitts and allow them to cool. Once cooled, re-coat the grates with vegetable oil and return them to the grill at approximately 200°F for two hours.
5. After completing these steps, your cast iron cooking grates will be seasoned and ready for use. It's normal for the grill to drip oil during this process and for several uses afterward.
Note: Never exceed a temperature of 400°F as this can damage the finish and contribute to rust. The paint is not warranted and may require touch-up. Additionally, charcoal and ashes should not be left inside the ash pan for an extended period as it may reduce the life of your grill.
