To use the Southwire 40012S Receptacle Tester to check the wiring of an electrical outlet, follow these steps:
1. Before performing the test, make sure to verify the operation of the tester on a known good receptacle that is properly wired and live.
2. Plug the tester into the receptacle being tested. Ensure that the tester is compatible with 110-125VAC receptacles only.
3. Once plugged in, observe the LED indicators on the tester. These indicators will light up in specific patterns to indicate the wiring condition of the receptacle.
4. Compare the LED indicators to the diagnostic chart printed on the tester. The chart will help you identify any wiring faults based on the lit LED indicators.
5. If the tester indicates a correctly wired outlet (Correct LED indicator), it means that the receptacle is wired correctly.
6. If the tester indicates a wiring fault, such as an open ground, open neutral, open hot, hot/ground reversed, or hot/neutral reversed, it means there is a problem with the wiring of the receptacle. In such cases, it is recommended to consult a qualified electrician to address the issue.
Please note that the Southwire 40012S Receptacle Tester is not a comprehensive diagnostic instrument and has certain limitations. It cannot indicate the quality of the ground, detect two hot wires in a circuit, detect a combination of defects, or indicate the reversal of grounded and grounding conductors.
