To replace the batteries in the Singer 1774 Hand Held Mending Machine, please follow these steps:
1. Ensure that the device is in the LOCK/OFF position before starting.
2. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the machine.
3. Insert 4 AA Alkaline batteries into the battery compartment, following the correct polarities marked on the machine or the diagram in the manual.
4. Make sure to replace all 4 AA Alkaline batteries as a simultaneous set.
5. Do not mix old and new batteries, and do not use Carbon Zinc or Heavy Duty batteries in this machine.
6. Avoid mixing alkaline, standard (carbon-zinc), or rechargeable (ni-cad, ni-mh, etc.) batteries.
7. Once the batteries are properly inserted, you can use the machine with battery power.
