To install the JBL GTO939 3-Way Coaxial Audio Speakers in your car, follow these steps:
1. Before you begin, make sure you have the necessary tools and supplies, such as oval-to-round speaker mounting adapters and speaker wire.
2. Determine whether you are installing coaxial or component speakers. Coaxial speakers combine a cone speaker for midrange frequencies with a tweeter for high frequencies in a single speaker chassis. Component speakers have separate midrange and tweeter drivers and require the installation of a passive crossover network.
3. Match the RMS power ratings of the speakers with the amplifier's RMS power output. Overpowering or underpowering speakers can cause damage or sound distortion. Aim for a power output that is within 25% of the speaker's RMS power handling.
4. Consider installing sound deadening and vibration control materials in the doors, trunk, rear shelf, and floor of the car to improve sound quality and reduce road noise.
5. Determine the speaker locations in your vehicle. Dash locations may require the removal of protective speaker grilles, while door locations may require the removal of door panels. Additional speakers may be located behind side panels, in rear strut tower panels, or in the floor.
6. If you are unsure of the factory speaker sizes and locations in your vehicle, consult resources like Scosche or Metra for fitment information.
7. If you are not comfortable with disassembling vehicle interior panels, consider hiring a professional installer.
8. If you are installing component speakers, review the speaker manufacturer's installation instructions for specific details on tweeter and passive crossover installation locations.
9. Install the tweeters in higher locations in the vehicle, such as the top triangle area at the front edge of the door panel, the 'A-pillar' windshield trim, or the upper front area of a door panel. Use the appropriate mounting hardware provided by the speaker manufacturer.
10. Install the passive crossover in a suitable location, avoiding high current power wiring and wet or moist areas. Recommended locations include under seats, in the trunk, or on the inner door skin outside of the moisture barrier plastic.
11. If using factory speaker wiring, cut the factory speaker plug and crimp a female .250" push-on terminal to each speaker wire. Connect the positive (+) factory speaker wire to the positive (+) terminal of the speaker, and connect the negative (-) factory speaker wire to the negative (-) terminal of the speaker.
12. If using new speaker wiring, connect the new speaker wire to the positive (+) and negative (-) speaker output of the receiver or amplifier, then connect it to the corresponding positive (+) and negative (-) terminals on the speaker and passive crossover.
13. Test the speakers by turning on the audio system and playing dynamic music. Verify that both left and right speakers are working properly by changing the speaker balance to left only, then center, then right only. Check for correct polarity by ensuring that the positive (+) and negative (-) wires are connected to the corresponding speaker terminals.
14. Once you have tested and verified the performance of the new speakers, reassemble the interior panels in the reverse order of removal. Pay attention to panel clips and pressure-fit hardware to secure the panels and prevent vibrations. Secure all wiring with zip ties and route them away from moving parts or heat sources.
