Installing the Leviton GFTR2-4W receptacle can be more complicated than installing a conventional receptacle. Here is a step-by-step guide to help you with the installation process:
1. Turn off the power: Before starting the installation, turn off the power to the circuit you will be working on. Locate the breaker or fuse that controls the circuit and switch it off or remove the fuse.
2. Identify the cables/wires: Determine if you have a LINE cable (power source) or a LOAD cable (power going to other receptacles in the circuit). If you are replacing an old receptacle, you can identify the cables based on the number of wires. One cable with 2-3 wires is the LINE cable, while two cables with 4-6 wires are the LOAD cables.
3. Connect the wires: Depending on the type of cable you have, follow the appropriate steps:
a. One Cable (2 or 3 wires): Connect the LINE cable wires to the LINE terminals on the GFCI receptacle. The white wire connects to the WHITE terminal (Silver), and the black wire connects to the HOT terminal (Brass or Black). If there is a grounding wire, connect it to the grounding terminal on the GFCI.
b. Two Cables (4 or 6 wires): Connect the LINE cable wires to the LINE terminals and the LOAD cable wires to the LOAD terminals. The white wires connect to the WHITE terminals, and the black wires connect to the HOT terminals. If there are grounding wires, connect them to the grounding terminals on the GFCI.
4. Complete the installation: Fold the wires into the electrical box, keeping the grounding wire away from the WHITE and HOT terminals. xxxx the receptacle to the box and attach the faceplate.
5. Test your work: After installation, test the GFCI to ensure it is wired correctly and providing protection. Plug a lamp or radio into the GFCI receptacle and turn on the power. Press the TEST button on the GFCI. If the lamp or radio turns off, the GFCI is functioning correctly. Press the RESET button to restore power.
Please note that this is a general guide, and it is important to consult the Leviton GFTR2-4W Smartlock GFCI Tamper-Resistant Receptacle User Manual for specific instructions and safety precautions.
