To rekey your Kwikset Smart Key lock, follow these steps:
1. Make sure the lock is mounted on the door and that the door is opened away from the door frame.
2. Insert the key that currently works with the lock and rotate it 1/4 turn to a horizontal position.
3. With the key in the horizontal position, insert the SmartKey tool fully and firmly into the SmartKey tool hole, then remove the tool.
4. Keeping the key horizontal, carefully remove the key. If the key does not remove, repeat step 3.
5. Insert the new key fully, making sure not to turn it away from the horizontal position.
6. Rotate the new key 1/4 turn to the vertical position. Do not remove the key before completing the next step.
7. Rotate the new key back to the horizontal position and try to remove the key.
8. If the key does not remove, you have successfully rekeyed your lock. If the key does remove, reinsert that key and repeat steps 4, 7, and 8.
9. If the problem persists, call the customer support number provided in the manual.
Please note that rekeying is not a required step and these instructions apply to all products with the SmartKey feature.
