To change the planer knives on the DEWALT DW735 Portable Thickness Planer, follow these steps:
1. Disconnect the planer from the power source and ensure it is turned off.
2. Remove the four screws located on the top of the planer to lift off the top cover.
3. Remove the three wing nuts that secure the dust shroud over the cutter head.
4. Rotate the dust shroud up and slide it to the left to disengage it from the fan housing.
5. Take out the dust shroud from the unit and set it aside.
6. If the eight screws in the cutter head clamp are not visible, use a piece of scrap wood to carefully rotate the cutter head until the screws are accessible and the cutter head lock lever engages to prevent further rotation.
7. Use the T-wrench to remove the eight screws on the knife clamp and set them aside in a small screws bin.
8. Use the magnets on the top of the T-wrench to attract the knife clamp and lift it off of the cutter head, exposing one of the knives.
9. Use the magnet on the top of the T-wrench to attract the knife and avoid touching it with your fingers.
10. If only one side of the knife is worn, turn the knife around so that the sharp, unused edge hangs over the end of the cutter head where it will cut the material. Ensure the oblong holes in the knife are aligned with the pins on the cutter head.
11. Reset the knife clamp over the knife, aligning the beveled edge on the clamp with the sharp, cutting edge of the knife.
12. Install the screws into the clamp and tighten them sufficiently.
13. To access the other two knives, depress the cutter head lock lever and use the scrap wood to carefully turn the cutter head until it locks into place, revealing another knife clamp. Repeat the knife change procedure for the remaining dull knives.
14. After installing the new knives, insert the round end of the dust shroud into the fan housing and rotate it down to lock it into place.
15. Place the three wing nuts back into the shroud.
16. xxxx the top cover of the planer back onto the unit.
17. Run the planer for 10 minutes to seat the new knives before using it.
